GORDO BANKS PANGAS

San Jose del Cabo

Anglers –

June 9, 2019

This week we did see more numbers of
anglers arriving, they were greeting
with great ocean conditions for the
most part, some late morning and
afternoon winds earlier in the week,
settling down by the weekend. Swells
were moderate, water temperatures on
the Sea of Cortez side were averaging
77 to 78 degrees, while colder
conditions in the 66 range were still
plaguing the Pacific. The local climate
continued to be ideal, not too hot
yet, weather now in the low to mid 80s,
some early morning marine cloud
cover burning off as the sun rose
higher, cool Pacific waters are
helping
to keep air temperatures mild.

Most all of the fishing action is now
in the direction of San Jose del Cabo
and to the north. The striped marlin
bite came on strong this week, as
these fish were found spread out
throughout the zone, anywhere from two
to
ten miles from shore. Bait supplies
consisted of mainly moonfish, ballyhoo
and some caballito, with lots of
smaller skipjack and some bolito found
schooling on the fishing grounds. The
majority of the marlin were striking
on various baitfish, though they would
also hit trolled lures, the stripers
were weighing in the 70 to 120 lb.
range.

After a long absence we were now
hearing of more reports of dorado being
seen, some landed, most were smaller,
but we did hear of a couple of nice
fish found further offshore that were
in the 20 lb. class. We do expect to
find more of these gamefish moving in,
as water conditions are now more
favorable. No reports of wahoo, though
the way the water shaping up,
something could develop on that at any
time.

Many charters are still working the yo-
yo jigs off of the rocks high spots
for the Mexican bonito, red snapper,
cabrilla and amberjack, though this
action providing some quality eating
fish, most of these fish were under
ten pounds. Inshore there were jack
crevalle, a few pargo and roosterfish,
to over 30 lb., though the annual
migration of the mass schools of mullet
has yet to appear, this is what
normally will bring in the main run of
the
quality sized roosterfish, everything
seems to be running a bit later than
normal this season, included this
marlin bite that now is happening.

On the San Luis Bank anglers were
finding chances at quality yellowfin
tuna
up to 100 lb., no big numbers yet, but
every day we have seen these tuna
brought in and all of them seem to be
at least 40 lb., with the majority
being over 70 lb. Striking mainly while
drift fishing with strips of squid,
a handful even hit on yo-yo jigs. Some
days were better than others,
factors of sea lions, sharks and crowds
came into play. But this week we
saw more tuna action than in the past
couple of months, so that is a
promising sign.

This is also now the time when we
should start seeing more amberjack and
dogtooth snapper appear. Often these
fish will be found close to shore
during June and July, before moving
further offshore to the high spots as
summer progresses

The combined sportfishing fleet
launching out of the panga area from
Puerto Los Cabos Marina reported an
estimated 98 charters for the week and
anglers reported an approximate fish
count of: 9 dorado, 44 striped marlin,
19 yellowfin tuna, 4 dogtooth snapper,
15 leopard grouper, 210 Mexican
bonito, 70 red snapper, 12 amberjack,
45 roosterfish, 12 jack crevalle and
90 triggerfish.

GORDO BANKS PANGAS

San Jose del Cabo

Anglers –

June 2, 2019

As we near the start of the summer
season we are now enjoying the ideal
climate, early morning cloud cover,
burning off as sun comes up, breeze
mostly out of the north, though also
switching from the south and high
temperatures in the lower 80s. Only
moderate crowds now, so it is the
perfect to visit. Ocean conditions are
cold on the Pacific, though in the
direction of San Jose del Cabo and to
the north we have seen clean blue
currents of 74 to 78 degrees.

Main baitfish now found in the local
marina area have been moonfish and
mullet, ballyhoo are another option, as
well as slabs of squid. Charters
are working the fishing grounds from
Red Hill, Palmilla, Gordo Banks, Iman,
San Luis and to Vinorama. Most
consistent catches have come from
bottom
structure, red snapper and Mexican
bonito most numerous, using iron yo-yo
style jigs, also drifting baits down
deep has producing some quality
catches. A handful of grouper species
and amberjack were accounted for,
some over 30 lb.

Early in the week there was limited
action for yellowfin tuna found on the
San Luis Bank, tuna to over 80 lb. were
landed, while drift with strips of
squid, this action faded during the
week, though the yellowfin were still
seen at times showing on the surface,
just not all that interested in
biting, but with the conditions
becoming more favorable, anything could
happen on any given day. Other tuna
were found further offshore traveling
with porpoise, this was a hit or miss
deal from day to day and these fish
were much smaller, mostly under 20 lb.

We have not seen dorado now for some
time, though this week a few were
hooked into while trolling open waters
on the marlin grounds, so we are
hoping to see more of these popular
gamefish move in.

There have been increasing numbers of
striped marlin now on the local
grounds, spread out from outside the
Gordo Banks, La Laguna, straight off
of San Jose del Cabo and outside of
Palmilla, anywhere from 4 to 10 miles
out, There were marlin that hit on
trolled lures and various baitfish, we
look for this action to break wide open
in coming weeks. Most of the
stripers are now in the 80 to 100 lb.
range.

There were stronger swells pounding the
shoreline, though the few charters
that did try closer in did report some
action for roosterfish and jack
crevalle, trolling with live mullet
seemed to work best for this action. We
also look for this bite to really break
wide open in coming weeks, as this
is always the local peak season for
roosterfish in the alter part of June.
Please remember that these game fish
should be released with care, they are
prized fighting fish, not known for
eating quality and grow to large sizes,
better to protect them for future
generations.

The combined sportfishing fleet
launching out of the panga area from
Puerto
Los Cabos Marina reported an estimated
74 charters for the week and anglers
reported an approximate fish count of:
2 dorado, 14 striped marlin, 6
yellowfin tuna, 2 dogtooth snapper, 12
leopard grouper, 1 broomtail
grouper, 170 Mexican bonito, 58 red
snapper, 4 yellow snapper, 13
amberjack, 10 glasseye pargo, 12
Pacific golden eyed tile fish, 14
roosterfish, 4 jack crevalle and 70
triggerfish.

Anglers –

May 26, 2019

May weather has been ideal, seems that
it has not become too warm yet, a
little cooler than we can normally feel
this close to summer time. Actually
about the perfect climate now, lows
about 65 degrees, highs averaging in
the lower 80’s, very few clouds, sunny
and dry. Crowds of anglers are
moderate now, great time for a visit,
with some eating fish being brought
in. Early in the week we saw currents
from the north push in water that was
in the 78/70 degree range, later in the
week it was holding more in the
74/76 range. Much of the week we felt
north winds, this limited at times
where charters went, later towards the
weekend winds laid down. With
changing currents, also this pushed in
slightly greenish off colored
waters. Transition period has been
unsettled for weeks now, eventually
conditions will heat up and we will see
some more stable patterns.

Bait vendors are finding moonfish,
jacks and some sardineta, also options
of ballyhoo. The most consistent action
being found was over the structure,
boats are working areas from off of Red
Hill/Palmilla, Gordo Banks. Cardon,
La Fortuna, San Luis, north to
Vinorama. Some of the best action was
very
early on the San Luis Banks, anglers
working yo-yo jigs did very well for
red snapper (huachinango), these fish
were quality, average of 5 to 12 lb.
Good number of The Mexican bonito as
well, also over the various rocky
areas there were some amberjack and
grouper species found, we saw amberjack
up to 70 pounds, most were in the 10 to
30 lb. range. Yellowtail action
died off, but some could still happen
with that, lots of sharks were moving
in around the Gordo Banks, some days
sea lions were a bad problem as well.

A handful of striped marlin were hooked
into, boat the off colored changing
currents, combined with passing of the
full moon, this seemed to spread
this action out, scattered activity for
billfish, surely will rebound as
soon as water conditions become more
favorable. No dorado or wahoo being
talked about, though there were some
yellowfin tuna accounted for from the
super pangas fishing on the northern
grounds from San Luis to Vinorama,
striking on cut bait and yo-yo jigs,
most of these yellowfin were in the 12
to 20 lb. range.

Inshore areas just south of Palmilla,
to Chileno produced good action for
roosterfish, some of these to over 30
lb. Slow trolling live bait was best
technique for these powerful gamefish.
Also in the mix were a handful of
late season sierra, as well as hog
sized jack crevalle.

The combined sportfishing fleet out of
the panga area from Puerto Los Cabos
Marina reported an estimated 60
charters for the week and anglers
reported
an approximate fish count of: 4 striped
marlin, 8 yellowfin tuna, 10
leopard grouper, 245 Mexican bonito, 82
red snapper, 5 yellow snapper, 7
African pompano, 5 barred pargo, 24
amberjack, 9 sierra, 12 glasseye pargo,
22 roosterfish, 10 jack crevalle and 40
triggerfish.

GORDO BANKS PANGAS

San Jose del Cabo

Anglers –

May 19, 2019

We are seeing limited crowds of
tourists now, but we have noticed an
increased number of actual anglers, so
hopefully this trend will continue.
Weather patterns remain ideal, lows of
about 65 degrees, with highs
reaching into the near 90 some days.
Mostly clear sunny skies, not many
clouds besides some early in the day
that quickly burn off. Moderate winds
later in the week, early on had been
very calm. Warmer current moving in
from the north, up to 78 degrees on the
Gordo Banks, still much cooler on
the Pacific side of Cabo San Lucas.

Bait netters had to work extra hard to
obtain what they could, a mix of
moonfish, caballito and a few species
of sardinas were found. On the
fishing grounds, namely Gordo Banks,
anglers were able to jig up some other
chihuil baitfish, but this proved
scarcer by the day as water warmed up
quickly. Using mullet now is
prohibited, believe this season will
open up
in coming weeks.

Main fishing grounds being concentrated
on now, have been from Palmilla,
Red Hill, Gordo Banks, San Luis and as
far north as Vinorama. The Gordo
Banks had been the location where
yellowtail were being found, averaging
25
to 35 lb., striking on larger live
baits near the bottom, though as the
week progressed this bite came to a
standstill, large numbers of various
shark species were also moving in on
these same grounds, that seems to
spook the gamefish. Sea lions were a
pesky problem as well, especially on
the grounds to the north, good action
for red snapper and bonito was
wrecked by these aggressive mammals.
Other bottom action included cabrilla,
leopard grouper, pargo and amberjack,
on Thursday there was a very
impressive 96 lb. amberjack landed from
a panga. More numbers bonito than
anything else, most of these were
striking on yo-yo style jigs, weighing
5
to 10 lb..

In recent days the striped marlin
became much more active, on these same
grounds and a bit further offshore
there were stripers being found, most
of
these were striking various baits and
average weights were 70 to 100 lb.,
though one monster striper of about 180
lb. was landed on Friday, many
people were thinking it was a blue
marlin because of its size, years past
we used to see more of the larger
striped marlin. One wahoo of about 25
lb.
was also landed Friday, no dorado or
yellowfin tuna to speak of. To the
north off of Cabo Pulmo they have been
finding tuna, so we expect these
fish will also move south into our
range before too long. Off of the San
Jose del Cabo hotel zone anglers were
finding better action for roosterfish
in the 15 to 25 lb. range, we look for
this action to peak in the six weeks
or so, please remember that these
gamefish should always be released. Not
as many sierra being seen now, no large
schools of sardinas to attract them
and as the water temperatures increase
these fish usually migrate out of
this region.

The combined sportfishing fleet out of
the panga area from Puerto Los Cabos
Marina reported an estimated 66
charters for the week and anglers
reported
an approximate fish count of: 13
striped marlin, 13 yellowtail, 1
yellowfin
tuna, 1 wahoo, 18 leopard grouper, 360
bonito, 74 red snapper, 10 yellow
snapper, 5 African pompano, 6 barred
pargo, 29 amberjack, 11 sierra, 6
glasseye pargo, 32 roosterfish and 75
triggerfish.

GORDO BANKS PANGAS

San Jose del Cabo

Anglers –

May 12, 2019

Light crowds of anglers are now
visiting, making it a great time to
come down with the minimal pressure.
Weather conditions are now ideal, very
little wind, perfect temperature, sunny
skies, with highs of about 82 degrees.
Ocean water temperature is now ranging
from as chilly as 68 degrees on the
Pacific, up to 75 degrees off of San
Jose del Cabo and towards the north.

Supplies of sardinas have become
scarcer, but are being found most
mornings. Surface action is slow to get
going, it is now the season where
things can change very quickly,
depending on conditions. Main action
now has been found from Palmilla to
Gordo Banks, La Fortuna, Iman and San
Luis. Catches included a mix of bonito,
sierra, roosterfish, pompano,
amberjack, red snapper, pargo, cabrilla
and yellowtail.

Some of the hard core local pangeros
fishing commercially have been leaving
very early, this has paid off in being
able to jig up chihuil baitfish by
using sabiki rigs on the Gordo Banks.
After the sun comes these bait fish do
not want to bite. These candy baits
have been producing quality catches of
yellowtail, averaging 25 to 30 lb.,
while soaking these baits on both the
Inner and Outer Gordo Banks. Sport
fishing fleet are catching a few, but
hard to leave at the hour needed to
catch the better bait for this action.

Anglers are using a mixed of available
batfish and yo yo jigs to produce a mix
of good eating bottom species. Marlin
action has been very spotty, but they
are seeing a few of the striped marlin,
actually in recent days, more of these
billfish were seen closer to shore than
further offshore, where water was a bit
more greenish. Still transition time to
where the water changes from green to
blue and currents are pushing in from
different directions. We are optimistic
that the all around action improve
soon.

No talk of yellowfin tuna, dorado or
wahoo now, but that could change at any
given time as conditions become warmer
and more favorable. Still plenty of sea
lions to deal with as well. Most all of
the whales have now moved out of the
region and are on their migration north
to their summer feeding grounds.

Inshore action consisted on some
roosterfish to 20 lb. and sporadic
action for sierra to over 5 lb. A
handful of African Pompano found off
inshore rocky areas, though there are
so many aggressive triggerfish it is
hard to get through them.

The combined sportfishing fleet out of
the panga area from Puerto Los Cabos
Marina reported an estimated 55
charters for the week and anglers
reported an approximate fish count of:
1 striped marlin, 14 yellowtail, 14
leopard grouper, 155 bonito, 26 red
snapper, 12 yellow snapper, 7 African
pompano, 10 moharra, 4 amberjack, 32
sierra, 4 glasseye pargo, 14
roosterfish and 85 triggerfish.

San Jose del Cabo

Anglers –

May 5, 2019

This week with the start of the new
month we saw increased numbers of
anglers showing up in town, along with
hundreds of off road racing
enthusiasts, here to celebrate the
finish of the annual Norra Mexican 1000
five day rally. Weather conditions were
excellent, nearly perfect climate now,
hardly a chill early morning, with
daytime highs reaching the mid-80s.
Swells were slight, winds minimal,
ocean temperatures ranged from 70 to 75
degrees through most of the region,
with warmest currents found outside of
San Jose del Cabo and towards the Gordo
Banks.

Main baitfish being found have been the
sardinas, a bit more spotty from day to
day, the netters have been finding
these schooling baitfish from near the
marina jetty and off of Palmilla,
though not in the quantity as in past
weeks.

This week we felt a warming trend with
different currents pushing in towards
the Gordo Banks zone and this helped
wake up the action some. Large whale
sharks were also sighted on these
grounds, slowly cruising around, not
spooked of the any boat traffic, being
larger than most boats themselves. No
huge numbers of any particular gamefish
species were being landed, though a
variety of fish were being seen,
including yellowtail to 30 lb. Early in
the week some boats had as many as
three yellowtail, since it has slowed,
though these yellows are still in the
area, downrigger proved to show best
results, though not all bats use this
method. Free swimming wahoo were
spotted, but not on the bite, some tuna
were seen working the surface, but they
proved difficult, these was an
occasional hook up reported. Jigging
off the bottom produced some bonito and
snapper.

A handful of yellowfin tuna were also
found on the grounds from Iman, San
Luis and Vinorama, a couple of tuna
between 80 and 100 lb. were accounted
for, most of these caught by local
pangeros specifically targeting these
fish for commercial value.

Closer to shore there was a variety of
shallow water structure species found,
drift fishing with sardinas worked well
for this action. Species included
sierra, yellow snapper, African
pompano, triggerfish and a handful of
amberjack.

Offshore there were reports of striped
marlin activity from around the 1150
spot, this is just starting to develop
and we expect to see this bit come on
strong though the entire month, this is
always the main season for stripers on
these local ground off of San Jose del
Cabo.

We expect to see schools of mullet to
show in abundance later this month,
which in turn will attract more inshore
gamefish, such as dogtooth snapper,
amberjack, jack crevalle and
roosterfish. At this time main inshore
action was for sierra mostly smaller
sized roosterfish.

The combined sportfishing fleet out of
the panga area from Puerto Los Cabos
Marina reported an estimated 64
charters for the week and anglers
reported an approximate fish count of:
4 striped marlin, 6 yellowfin tuna, 11
yellowtail, 11 leopard grouper, 210
bonito, 22 red snapper, 12 mohara, 18
yellow snapper, 8 African pompano, 15
amberjack, 85 sierra, 10 glasseye
pargo, 12 roosterfish and 95
triggerfish.

GORDO BANKS PANGAS

San Jose del Cabo

Anglers –

April 28, 2019

For the entire month we have noticed
far less tourists arriving than we
would normally see, we believe that
part of the reason for this has been
the U.S. government threatening to shut
down the border with Mexico and people
are worried that they will become
stranded or lose out on deposits paid,
etc, many people have mentioned this
and are waiting for the situation to
stabilize before committing to their
travel plans or simply just going
elsewhere. We never thought the border
would actually be closed, think it just
was a scare tactic, anyway, this has
hurt local businesses.

Weather patterns were typical spring
time, actually still a little chilly
early in the morning, down to 60
degrees, though skies are mostly clear
and sunny with daytime highs reaching
85 degrees, ideal climate, only if it
could stay like this year round. Winds
were very moderate, ocean conditions
comfortable, though water was still
cooler, averaging 68 to 71 degrees
through much of the inshore zone, we
now see warmer water on the outside, up
to 74/75 degrees, should move closer to
shore soon, pushing in cleaner blue
water and bring in more of the pelagic
gamefish.

There continue to be schooling sardinas
found around the jetty area of Puerto
Los Cabos Marina, nice sized sardinas
as well, this has been the main
baitfish being used now, also some
smaller sized mullet in the mix. New
marina rules are not allowing bait
netters to work inside the marina as
they had in the past, this has limited
opportunities for caballito, it is
about time that authorities do try to
control this marina and they could also
work on wake speed enforcement.

Most consistent action being found now
was for sierra and bonito, sierra
mainly on the live sardinas, being
found along many of the inshore
stretches. Bonito were hitting the same
baits and also readily on the yo-yo
jigs, hanging over the various rock
piles.

Areas north of Punta Gorda, Cardon, La
Fortuna and Iman Bank, were being
targeted as well, catches included
yellow snapper, amberjack, cabrilla,
bonito and triggerfish. Later in the
week a couple of yellowtail were
reported from off the Outer Gordo Bank,
so maybe something will happen on this,
it has been another slow season for
yellowtail, but still a chance they
will become active in the coming weeks.
There has been a noticeable increase in
sea lion activity on these same fishing
grounds, this can always put a damper
on things in a hurry.

This year we have seen more fluctuating
water conditions, has started to warm
up, then just like that would turn over
and cool back off, becoming greenish,
has been on and off like this for
weeks. With some more consistent warmer
weather, less wind, we should see some
stabilization and improved action
before long. This can be the time where
things can change quickly, increasing
activity for the striped marlin, tuna,
wahoo and dorado. We will hope this
happens sooner than later.

The combined sportfishing fleet out of
the panga area from Puerto Los Cabos
Marina reported an estimated 58
charters for the week and anglers
reported an approximate fish count of:
5 yellowfin tuna, 2 yellowtail, 15
leopard grouper, 125 bonito, 24 red
snapper, 14 mohara, 14 yellow snapper,
22 amberjack, 165 sierra, 4 glasseye
pargo, 7 roosterfish and 75
triggerfish.

Anglers –

April 21, 2019

This is a busy week locally, Easter
vacation time, many businesses shut
down for the extended weekend holiday
to be with family along the various
beaches. We have not seen that many
tourists arriving, who knows why, but
seems to be much lighter than we would
normally expect. Weather is back on a
warming trend, highs of about 85
degrees, we felt unpredictable winds
early in the week, coming from various
directions, ocean water temperatures
cooled down to 68 degrees, also
greenish current pushed in. That time
of year ocean conditions can vary
greatly from week to week. Should
settle down in coming weeks as warm
calmer weather prevails.

Some quality sized sardinas showed up
in the local marina channel area,
nicest we have seen in a long time,
also some moonfish and caballito. Best
action was found from Palmilla Point
north to La Fortuna, Iman and San Luis
Banks. Mainly working the bottom
structure with yo-yo jigs and various
baits. Good numbers of the Eastern
Pacific Bonito, some red snapper,
cabrilla, pargo and amberjack rounding
out catches. Catches of course varied
day to day as to where the better
action was found and at times wind was
a factor as well.

Early week we did see a few yellowfin
tuna in the 30 to 50 lb. range brought
in, but since we have not seen any
more, neither did we see dorado, wahoo
or marlin. As conditions rebound these
species should start to appear more
regularly in the daily fish counts.

We also saw more numbers of sierra in
recent days, the sardinas were the
reason for this, sizes were also
impressive, many fish over 5 lb. were
accounted for. The Palmilla, Red Hill
area was one of the better locations to
find the schooling sierra. With the
cooler water it was hard to find any
roosterfish, this should change in the
coming weeks.

Late in the season now, but whales were
still being seen daily, maybe the
colder water is keeping them around
longer, because the majority of these
mammals are now well on their way
north, migrating to their summer
feeding grounds off of Alaska.

The combined sportfishing fleet out of
the panga area from Puerto Los Cabos
Marina reported an estimated 62
charters for the week and anglers
reported an approximate fish count of:
3 yellowfin tuna, 16 leopard grouper, 3
broomtail grouper, 155 bonito, 46 red
snapper, 2 barred pargo, 4 African
pompano, 12 yellow snapper, 8
amberjack, 72 sierra and 80
triggerfish.

Anglers –

February 17, 2019

Still just moderate crowds of anglers
arriving, kind of normal for this time
of year. The weather patterns seem to
on a warming trend, actually feeling
like spring already, mostly clear sunny
skies, with highs of 80 degrees. This
next week the forecast looks to be
slightly cooler, hard to predict now,
transition periods from winter to
spring, on and off changes. The water
clarity improved closer to shore this
week, water temperature seemed to warm
slightly, now in the 71 to 75 degree
range, offshore area the warmest.
Though much of the more consistent
fishing

action has been closer to shore.

There was a couple of days where
limited supplies of sardinas were
located, this was inside the marina
channel, of course the word traveled
and now we see none again, at least it
was a sign that these schooling
baitfish are moving back into the
region, needs to be some kind of
control, more preserve zones are
required as well. There re mackerel in
the area, but a little more hit or miss
from day to day, also slabs of squid,
as well as ballyhoo and chihuil are
rounding out bait options;

Highlight for the week were a handful
of yellowfin tuna that were taken off
of the Gordo Banks, drift fishing with
squid and sardinas, these tuna were in
the 80 lb. class. Also a few wahoo
biting on the grounds from Punta Gorda
to the Iman Bank, including one of
about 70 lb. on Friday. Not normally
the time of year for wahoo, but with
the conditions how they are, there are
some wahoo in the area. Not many dorado
being accounted for, but every now and
then a boat will come in with one or
two, more of these found closer to
shore, sizes up to 15 lb.

Most numerous fish were the various
bottom species, different pargo,
snapper, grouper, amberjack and even a
few smaller yellowtail in the mix. Red
snapper on pieces of squid was a good
bet in recent days, more of these under
five pounds.

Marlin bite was more spread out, but
charters are finding striped marlin off
of San Jose del Cabo grounds, as well
as the 950, 1150 spots. It appears that
many of the stripers that were on the
Pacific are now moving in the direction
of the Sea of Cortez, it is all about
following their food supply.

The combined sportfishing fleet out of
the panga area from Puerto Los Cabos
Marina reported an estimated 69
charters for the week and anglers
reported an approximate fish count of:
11 striped marlin, 22 dorado, 15
yellowfin tuna, 13 wahoo, 32 bonito,
245 red snapper, 14 bagueta, 2
sheepshead, 4 pompano, 12 leopard
grouper, 10 roosterfish, 4 yellowtail,
5 amberjack, 14 sierra and 110
triggerfish.

GORDO BANKS PANGAS

San Jose del Cabo

Anglers –

February 10, 2019

We saw more north winds through most of
the week, calming down for the weekend,
ideal climate now, moderate crowds,
making this a great time to visit the
Los Cabos area. Ocean temperatures
dropped into the 70 to 72 degree range
though most of the region, transition
period for migrating pelagic gamefish,
warmer water species head south during
this colder period.

Offshore action was limited mainly to
looking for striped marlin, action was
better early in the week and became
more scattered as the week progressed.
Schools of mackerel were found off of
the San Jose del Cabo grounds, as well
as sardineta, chihuil and inside the
marina area there were caballito. Some
unconfirmed reports of sardinas being
seen along beach stretches north of
Cabo San Lucas, so we are hoping that
maybe these baitfish will become
available.

With the cooling waters the action for
the more glamorous species such as
yellowfin tuna, dorado and wahoo has
all but halted. Normal deal during this
time frame, besides the on and off
striped marlin action offshore, fleets
start to search out inshore and bottom
structure for a variety of smaller
fish. We are waiting to see if a run of
yellowtail and red snapper develops.
There were red crabs found this week
drifting to the surface on the Gordo
Banks, this is normally a positive sign
for finding the red snapper. So far the
snapper action was mainly for the
smaller sized fish, the huachinango of
over ten pounds have not been plentiful
yet. More triggerfish off the rock
piles than anything else. Drift fishing
with pieces of squid seemed to produce
the more consistent action, most of
these fish smaller in size, but all of
them very fine eating. We saw a few
sheepshead and pompano in the mix.

The weather feels like we are now on a
warming trend, at least we have now
seen the frigid low temperatures as the
week before. We need these north winds
to lay down more and give a chance for
ocean conditions to rebound. Recently
there were strong currents moving in
and out, this always make it tough to
try and concentrate on bottom action.

The combined sportfishing fleet out of
the panga area from Puerto Los Cabos
Marina reported an estimated 59
charters for the week and anglers
reported an approximate fish count of:
1 sailfish, 13 striped marlin, 11
dorado, 2 yellowfin tuna, 92 bonito,
125 red snapper, 4 bagueta, 6 yellow
snapper, 8 pompano, 10 surgeon fish, 8
barred pargo, 3 sheepshead, 8 hog fish,
13 sierra and 85 triggerfish.
