Even Catfish are finicky |
Taste Buds ? Catfish have a more refined sense of flavor than humans. Our 10,000 taste buds may seem like a lot, but catfish can have as many as 175,000. This helps them find the exact location of their next meal. |

This is a story about Louie (my little grandson), and a little pond just about a block from our house. I must’ve been by that little pond a hundred times. It’s so small, that I could throw a rock across it with very little effort. I’ve never seen anybody fishing there, and I figured that the most that could be in there would be some small bluegills, or maybe a catfish or two. I had been taking Louie out in the boat with me, trying to get him interested in fishing, but so far he hadn’t been able to catch much. Well, on a bright sunny day this past January, Louie and me were bored, so just on a whim we decided to give that little pond a try. We drove down to the local bait shop first, picked up three dozen minnows and a candy bar. The candy bar has become tradition, any time we go to the bait shop. We got back, parked the truck at the house, grabbed our poles, and tackle boxes, Louie grabbed his lucky Spiderman hat and with minnow bucket in hand, we headed off. After the short walk, we arrived at the edge of the pond and set up under the only shade tree that we could find. I can tell you that when we’re fishing with minnows, Louie just absolutely refuses to leave until every minnow is used up, and I had already figured that we were probably in for a long afternoon. Much to my surprise though, after only about two hours and ten bluegills, we were down to the last minnow in the bucket. Well, Louie put it on his hook and cast his little ultra-light out as far as he could. I was gathering up stuff, getting ready to leave, when I heard that familiar, 'I GOT ONE GRAMPA', 'I GOT ONE'. Figuring it was just another Bluegill, I said, without even looking up, “okay, reel er’ in here”. Just about then I heard a huge commotion and looked around just in time to see the biggest, baddest bucketmouth that I had ever seen in all my fifty-seven years of hard fishing, doing a flip. I immediately threw down all the stuff in my hands and started yelling 'HOLD HIM LOUIE', LET HIM RUN', 'KEEP THAT LINE TIGHT'. I think I was more excited than he was and he was giggling out loud. After about fifteen very tense minutes and three or four more jumps, he had the monster worn down. As he was dragging it up to the bank, I could see that fish was just barely hooked through his top lip. This is when I really started getting nervous. I could just see that hook popping out of there, and that trophy largemouth just swimming away. So with my heart in my throat, and on my knees in the mud, I stretched out as far as I could and put a death grip on his lower jaw. I could hardly believe what I had in my hand. I just held him there in the water. We didn't have a camera with us, so I told Louie to run home and get his Mama to bring the camera. I've never seen him run so fast. After what seemed like only a couple of minutes, the whole family and a few of the neighbors came running back. We took pictures, weighed and measured the monster, and then all just marveled at the giant for a few minutes. And then Louie turned him loose, back into that little tiny pond. What a fish! 14 pounds even. A replica now hangs on Louie’s bedroom wall, and we have to salute the “big bass” every night before he goes to bed. Not only did a monster bass get hooked that day, but so did a little boy. Believe me when I say that a fishing fanatic was born that day. I guess the moral of this story is obvious. We now have ruts worn in the road from our house to that little tiny pond just up the street. Gotta love it………I’m just sayin’. |
