Noel Gyger - WEEKLY FISHING REPORT dated March 23 – March 30, 2008
(Number 64)
Dear Fishing Friends:
SUMMARY: The weather has been good all week. Maybe spring has arrived. The Steelhead fishing is good for both spin and fly rods. A Steelhead of over 20-pounds was landed this week. Only problem is the water levels on most of our rivers is still extremely low making it near impossible to get around with a jet boat. No problem for the drift boats and the rafts. The spring melt off on the mountains has not started yet. The fishing pressure is light also. The lower Zymoetz (Copper) River is still holding a few Steelhead and a few fresh ones are coming in now. I have a report of a few fish being caught on the fly rod. A few fishermen are now starting to fish on the main stem Skeena River looking for that spring run Steelhead. In the meantime lots of Cutthroat and Dolly Varden Char to keep the fishermen entertained while waiting for Steelhead. See a Nicholas Dean Lodge report below. See a Kitimat River report below.

KITIMAT RIVER:

SKEENA RIVER: The water is in good shape, low and clean.
KALUM RIVER: The water, both upper and lower sections are in excellent shape and fishing for Steelhead is good. The water is very low, so one must be very careful if using a boat. I have heard of one jet-boat smashing the bottom pretty good in a shallow rocky tail-out.
March 29, 2008 the water was so low my friend and I could only make it to three good pools with my jet boat. We did manage to hook three Steelhead and land two, one dark spawned out (kelt) female about 8-pounds and one dark male about 4-pounds…which is well below the average size for this river. The low, extremely clean water and the bright sunny day may have had something to do with the slow action. The fish had to be very spooky. Anyway, we still had a lot of fun.
This is a Classified River year round and can be guided from March 15 through October 15 only. The Steelhead record is 32-pounds. To see a photo of this fish cast to: http://noelgyger.ca/records/Record003.jpg The angler is Dennis Therrien.
ZYMOETZ (COPPER) RIVER: The upper section is closed to fishing as of December 31 but the lower section below the first canyon will stay open for Steelheaders to enjoy. Fishing there has been good.
AREA RIVER RECORDS: Chinook Salmon: Skeena River, 92.5-pounds; Kalum River, 85-pounds; Kitimat River, 74-pounds; Steelhead: Skeena River, 45-pounds; Coho Salmon: Skeena River, 27-pounds.
Fishing Report from: Nicholas Dean Lodge for the Week of March 23 to March 29/08
Spey fishing is a popular method in fishing the Skeena and its tributaries. In addition to being an incredibly effective tool for covering water, Spey casting is just plain good fun. Katy Sexton Photo
The Steelhead available in the Spring months on the Skeena and its tributaries are large, strong fish that respond well to a variety of flies and lures fished deep. This chrome hen took a black and blue fly on the swing in the middle of the pool. Katy Sexton Photo
Hello Anglers,
Our 2008 Spring Steelhead season has started off incredibly well, with a strong showing of some very big fish on the Skeena and its tributaries. Guests Jeff Bright and Martin Walker have had the lodge to themselves over the last week, and have ventured out with their Spey rods in tow to swing flies for some of the largest Steelhead around. Being the keen anglers they are, they wanted to fish the same afternoon they arrived in Terrace, and after only a few hours of fishing, Jeff landed a 14 lb Steelhead on one of his artistic patterns. And from that day on, their fishing only improved.
Last year, Martin had somewhat of a discouraging start to the Spring, with only a few fish in a week’s fishing. This year has been a different story though. Martin has landed over 10 Steelhead, with most of the fish being in the 10 to 18 lb range. He even landed one very large buck that was 39 inches long and had a 22 inch girth – between 21 and 23 lbs according to Sturdy’s formula. It could be argued that for all good things you have to pay your dues. I think that Martin would agree…
Until next week, tight lines and screaming reels,

CURRENT REPORT and summary for Northern Coastal Rivers:
Fishing Report from: Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters
KITIMAT RIVER: Spring is here but this week only during the afternoons. We experienced warm, sunny weather in the afternoon but in the mornings it has either snowed or remained frosty cold. Only in the North West can we get all four seasons in the same day. The effect of this erratic weather on the river conditions is that the river is staying very low and clean.
The Trout fishery continues to be very spotty this year but there have a few reports of Steelhead. Jody Dennil's nephew caught a small Steelhead (6 lbs.) while they were fishing for trout. One of our staff in our tackle store, Jesse Houston caught about a 10lb. steelhead in the lower river. The Kitimat hatchery staff reported landing a Steelhead while they were collecting brood stock for Cutthroat.
DOUGLAS CHANNEL: The better weather conditions has been enticing more boaters to get out fishing but the Winter Chinook fishery continues to be very spotty. Most boaters are de- winterizing their boats and getting organized for the fishing season. Crabbing seems to be the focus right now and should evolve to bottom fishing. Anglers are reminded to review new regulations especially halibut catch limits.

Noel Gyger - WEEKLY FISHING REPORT dated March 16 – March 23, 2008
Dear Fishing Friends:
SUMMARY: The weather has been good all week (little rainy at times) and the Steelhead fishing is good for both spin and fly rods. Both the upper and lower sections of the Kalum River are in good shape and the water is very low. The spring melt off on the mountains has not started yet. The fishing pressure is light also. The lower Zymoetz (Copper) River is still holding a few Steelhead and a few fresh ones are coming in now. I have a report of a few fish being caught on the fly rod. The ice that was a problem earlier has melted. A few fishermen are now starting to fish on the main stem Skeena River looking for that spring run Steelhead. In the meantime lots of Cutthroat and Dolly Varden Char to keep the fishermen entertained while waiting for Steelhead. See a Kalum River report below. See a Kitimat River report below.
BOAT RAMPS: The Kalum River boat launch in Fishermen’s park near town is closed for now as repairs are being done. The ramp on the other side (Kitsumkalum First Nations) is open. Be careful when jet boating as the water is extremely low.
Kitimat and Terrace prepare to welcome visitors to the area. We are all looking forward to a good tourist season this year.

SKEENA RIVER: The water is in good shape, low and clean and most of the ice is all gone.
KALUM RIVER: The water, both upper and lower sections are in excellent shape and fishing for Steelhead is good. The water is very low, so one must be very careful if using a boat.
March 18, 2008 I went fishing with my friends Rob and Brent on the upper Kalum. We noticed on arrival at the boat ramp the water had dropped even lower than it was the last time we were out. This limited the number of pools we could access to fish. It did not matter as we fished for only a half a day. Last time out Rob and I hooked seven Steelhead but it was slow this time, we hooked only two. Out of those two Brent landed a dark Male that weighed around 10-pounds. I decided to shoot a little video. Here is the direct link to the video clip Video Clip 0046 Brent's Kalum Steelhead. Hope you enjoy it. The Kalum River gives up a mix bag of Steelhead this time of year some have just come in and some have been wintering over. This male probably has been wintering over looking for a bright female!
I have been asked about the landing net Rob and I use many times. It is called the Rushton Landing Net and is oblong in shape specifically designed to hold a fish in deeper water for a more gentle “catch and release”. The “mesh” is very soft. Using the net keeps the fish off of the rocks (shore line) which may damage the fish if it “flops” around. Using the net is less stressful on the fish as it keeps the fish in the water so that it can breathe. For more information on the net contact me anytime or cast to their website at http://www.rushtonlandingnets.com
We noticed the fishing guides were out and their clients were fishing with Spey fly rods. Hope they had some luck.
This is a Classified River year round and can be guided from March 15 through October 15 only. The Steelhead record is 32-pounds. To see a photo of this fish cast to: http://noelgyger.ca/records/Record003.jpg The angler is Dennis Therrien.

CURRENT REPORT and summary for Northern Coastal Rivers:
Fishing Report from: Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters
KITIMAT RIVER: The weather continues to get milder with sunny days and blue sky but there is still a cold bite in the air in the morning.
More anglers are getting out on the river fishing for cutthroat trout and maybe the odd Steelhead. The trout fishing seems to be a bit spotty right now. Pat Oliver managed to catch a couple small ones on Thursday and the comments are the same from other anglers. There was a Steelhead reported landed on the island across from the Kitimat Hatchery. 'It was big and bright' said Justin Lowes who witnessed the Steelhead being landed from across the river.
DOUGLAS CHANNEL: As reported last week herring came into MK Bay Marina to spawn but they didn't stay. They moved in for a day and then moved out again. With herring activity spotty so are the fishing results. There have been a few boats trolling for Winter Springs but with little success. Most boats are concentrating on crabbing. The fishing should improve as more herring migrate into the harbour to spawn.

Noel Gyger - WEEKLY FISHING REPORT dated March 9 – March 16, 2008
(Number 62)
Dear Fishing Friends:
SUMMARY: The weather has been good all week (but snowing today) and I was finally able to get out fishing. My good friend Rob Vodola and I fished for Steelhead on the Kalum River on March 14. We fished only a half day but still managed to hook-up with seven beautiful Steelhead and landed four. They were two bright females, one bright male and one big dark male (see photo of the week). In our opinion this river has a good run of Steelhead. The water is still very low and extremely clean and I think the fish were spooking on large terminal tackle. This river is now open for guiding on March 15. Check below for another photo from our day of fishing and a little story.
The snow and ice are going fast but please be careful fishing around melting ice.

LAST MINUTE BOOKINGS: We still have a few spots open for the spring Steelhead fishing on the upper Kalum River in March and April. We guide from drift boats, rafts or jet boat and fish a five mile stretch that has 27 pools. We match however you like to fish using both fly and spin methods! On average and under good conditions each boat can expect to hook about six to a dozen fish per day. The most fish hooked from one boat was 27 on March 27, 1997. The lodge record 32-pound Steelhead was landed the first week in April. Good fishing should last until April 30 or until the water is too high from the spring melt-off.
Available dates are:
-- March 31 to April 6, 2008 - 6 spaces
-- April 6 to 12, 2008 - 4 spaces
-- April 20 to 26, 2008 - 2-4 spaces
At this point, we are offering a 10% discount off the 2008 rates as a promotion.
Chinook start showing up third week in April and first week in May and one may hook both Steelhead and Chinook in the same day. Talk about fun. It doesn’t get any better than this!
Many people book three trips per year to our area; one trip in the spring (March-April-May), one trip in the summer (June-July-August) and one trip in the fall (September-October-November). They love having the same guide but fishing for different fish in different areas.

KALUM RIVER: The water, both upper and lower sections are in excellent shape and fishing for Steelhead is good. The water is very low, so one must be very careful if using a boat.
A little story about this fish: I caught this fish on a light spoon. It hit real hard and fought like heck. When Rob got it into the net for me we looked at the fish and we could not tell if it was a male or a female. It had a funny looking head, not the typical small mouth of a female or a large mouth of a male. We decided it must be a male…anyway…a fresh one at that. No wonder it fought so hard. Something else we noticed was it had a set of two (tied in tandem) single barbless hooks still in its mouth, the kind that the ocean fishermen use. This fish must have been hooked in the ocean and broke off but the hooks remained in its mouth along with about six inches of fishing line. The tandem hooks were tied with what looked like 40-pound test, so how this fish got away is a mystery. In the photo you can still see the scar marks from those hooks. We wondered if those hooks had anything to do with the shape of it’s head? We have to admire the survival instinct of these fish. It is at least 140 miles to the ocean and here he is coming home to spawn.
This is a Classified River year round and can be guided from March 15 through October 15 only. The Steelhead record is 32-pounds. To see a photo of this fish cast to: http://noelgyger.ca/records/Record003.jpg The angler is Dennis Therrien.
ZYMOETZ (COPPER) RIVER: The upper section is closed to fishing as of December 31 but the lower section below the first canyon will stay open for winter Steelheaders to enjoy. The lower end is frozen over but is melting fast.
AREA RIVER RECORDS: Chinook Salmon: Skeena River, 92.5-pounds; Kalum River, 85-pounds; Kitimat River, 74-pounds; Steelhead: Skeena River, 45-pounds; Coho Salmon: Skeena River, 27-pounds.

KITIMAT RIVER: When I first started to write this report on Friday I intended to rave about the warm, sunny spring weather we have been having this past week. It is now Sunday morning and as I sit down to submit this report I look outside and we got another dusting of snow. Winter just does not want to end this year.
The access roads into the Sawmill and Humphrey’s Creek have been plowed I believe by the Kitimat Hatchery.
There have been some cutthroat anglers out fishing but only a few fish to report.
There has been a couple of Steelhead reported to have been spooked out of the shallow water as the anglers were wading along the river. It is still early for Steelhead but it is nice to see signs of some early fish. The peak month for Steelhead on the Kitimat River is usually April.
DOUGLAS CHANNEL:
There have been more boaters this week getting out getting their first feed of crab of the season. Dungeness crab is a welcome treat for most boaters and is the incentive to get the boats out of winter storage and into the water.
The herring have started to migrate into the Kitimat Harbour to spawn. The majority of the herring spawning activity to date is in M.K Bay Marina on the east side of the harbour. They were first observed in large numbers in M.K Marina on Friday so I drove down to Moon Bay Marina on Saturday (March 15th) to see if there was any activity on the west side of the harbour. There was no herring activity on this side yet and the wind was creating some pretty big waves.
Consequently there were no boats out trolling to catch the winter springs that followed the herring into the harbour. There were some anglers in our tackle store gearing up with herring jigs to catch some herring. There was one angler who was going to try some live mooching right off the dock at the marina. This 'Live mooching' technique involves catching a live herring, rigging the live herring with a tandem hook set up and a small weight and simply feed out enough line to allow the herring to swim around to attract a feeding chinook. You then put the mooching rod into a rod holder and wait for a feeder chinook to eat the herring. It is a pretty cool way to fish and it is only possible to fish with this method this time of year when the live herring are available. The other added feature of this method is that you can continue to catch herring while you are watching the mooching rod.

I’m through being your C H U M. I thought we were friends. But, now look at the predicament you got me into. I can’t breathe and what looked like a tasty morsel I just bit into, had no flavor at all, and it was really tough. So much for the gourmet food you promised. We’re finished and if I ever get back home, all my other fishin buddies will know that you’re out for just one “Thing”. I thought you really loved me and you even said you would respect me in the morning, for going along with this stupid idea of yours, Fishing!

Noel Gyger - WEEKLY FISHING REPORT dated March 2 – March 9, 2008
(Number 61)
Dear Fishing Friends:
SUMMARY: Everyone welcomed the warmer weather that finally showed up. Even with the unseasonably cold weather both spin and fly fishermen hooked Steelhead although the spin fishermen had a distinct advantage over the fly fishermen. Most dedicated fly fishermen will tell you that it is not the number of fish they land it is the whole experience combined. The water is very low and in excellent shape but it may be too low for jet boats. As far as we can tell the Kalum River has another good run of winter Steelhead in it and the fresh spring runs should be coming in also. The snow has melted enough so one can launch a boat now.
LIST OF “New” ITEMS POSTED ON THE WEBSITE THIS WEEK:
- Feb 28/08 one item re last minute openings at a discount price http://www.noelgyger.ca/special-guided.htm
- Mar 4/08 one item posted on “Conservation” http://www.noelgyger.ca/conservation.htm
- Mar 8/08 one update #3 re Skeena “Quality Waters Strategy” http://www.noelgyger.ca/quality-waters.htm
NOW BOOKING FOR 2008 Let me know if I can be of service to book you with the 'best' fishing guide and/or fishing lodges. There are NO extra charges to book through me, just a lot of free information and advice from a person with years and years of fishing and fish guiding experience. It is like hiring two guides for the price of one. I will promptly answer your questions and concerns. Cast here http://noelgyger.ca/special-guided.htm to read more of what I have to offer.
Be sure to check out my website at www.noelgyger.ca for news bulletins, mid week fishing updates, conservation, my history, quality waters strategy, special guided fishing trips, video clips, scenic river photos, wildlife photos and others, comments from past guests, informational articles, archived fishing reports from 1996 through 2002 and a sportfishing market place. I hope it meets with your entire satisfaction.

Fishing Report from: Nicholas Dean Lodge for the Week of March 2 to March 8/08
The weather has finally started to cooperate and rivers are now back into decent shape in the Skeena region. Rivers are running that seductive shade of green that is often so conducive to good Steelhead fishing. Though water temperatures are cold and clear, Steelhead and Bull trout have been receptive to small and medium sized flies, as well as spoons and other gear fished deep and slow.
A few weeks from now we will be welcoming our first guests for our Spring Steelhead season. Large, aggressive wild Steelhead will be the target and this often proves to be one of the more reliable times of year to entice a trophy. If you enjoy making long casts with your spey rod, or seeing the quick drop of your float as a Steelhead takes, this is a great time of year. And with a 10% discount off 2008 rates and a few dates still available in prime weeks, there isn’t a better time to hunt for that Steelhead of your dreams. Contact Noel today for more details.
Until next week, tight lines and screaming reels,
Chad Black

CURRENT REPORT and summary for Northern Coastal Rivers:
Fishing Report from: Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters
KITIMAT RIVER: With the weather getting milder it seems that we are finally starting to see the signs of Spring. Another indicator is that we also set our clocks ahead one hour. The river is completely free flowing and the snow is receding away from the waters edge. Justin Lowes and Justin Little drifted with pontoon boats and reported no obstructions. They also reported no fish but they said 'they had a great day on the river'.
DOUGLAS CHANNEL: The milder weather has encouraged more boaters to get out on the Douglas. Pat Oliver and his group got out Friday and report their full limit of crab. The first feed of dungeness crab in the spring is a welcome treat after a long winter. The only report of winter springs is still 'Fish Trap' which is still a ways out. We should start to see some herring coming into the Kitimat harbour to spawn any time now. With the herring, the winter spring fishery in the harbour will follow.

CURRENT REPORT and summary for Northern Coastal Rivers:
Fishing Report from: Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters
KITIMAT RIVER: The weather this week continued to warm up and we were starting to think that spring was in the air. We had blue sky and the afternoon sun was actually quite warm. The snow banks started to shrink and just when we thought winter was finally coming to an end we got another dump of snow on Thursday (Feb 28th). The snow has not deterred Ariel Kuppers and Pat Oliver from getting out fishing for Cutthroat. They caught and released five cutthroat last week and Ariel continued to catch a couple almost every outing.
They went out on Friday only to find a bunch of anglers in their favorite spot. Such is life in the fishing world. Where ever the fish start to group, fishermen will find them. Pat said that they fished a couple of other holes but didn't catch anything. This is typical fishing for cutthroat this time of year. The fish are grouped up in certain holes and will stay there for long periods of time. The trick is to find them. 'We'll find another spot' says Pat.
DOUGLAS CHANNEL: There have been reports of feeder chinook been caught down the channel at Fish Trap.(25 miles out). The same boater also reported catching a King Crab. He also reports seeing some balls of herring. This is a good sign for the Harbour fishery for 'winter Springs'. They should be working their way up the channel to this end. There has been more boaters gearing up to fish the Kitimat harbour this weekend. Typically the hearing should come into the harbour to spawn and the feeder chinook will follow the herring. There is a small window
of opportunity when there is some really good Chinook fishing and the herring are also a lot fun to catch, especially for the kids. Stay tuned to this report as I will update this fishery as it evolves.

Noel Gyger - WEEKLY FISHING REPORT dated February 17 – February 24, 2008
(Number 59)
Dear Fishing Friends:
SUMMARY: Day time air temperatures have been mostly above freezing. The ice has started to melt on most of our rivers and more runs and pools are available to anglers. It has been a harsh winter but I understand the snow-pack is normal. The only river without an ice problem is the Kalum. The Kitimat River is opening up also. Check out the nice Kitimat River Trout photos below. It seems like spring is on its way.
LIST OF “New” ITEMS POSTED ON THE WEBSITE THIS WEEK:

MY HISTORY
Here are a couple of photos from the mid 1980’s that bring back good memories for me. This is where it all started regarding drift boats. We could not buy drift boats in our area so we built our own. This is our first fiberglass boat my friends and I built. I think we built about 10 boats. Not many of them around anymore. They were big, over 19 feet in length with high sides, not like today’s boats which are much shorter with low sides. None of us had any idea how to row them but through “trial and error” we learned. On our first drift on the upper Kalum River we got swept into a sweeper tree that just about rolled the boat. The boat was turned sideways by the strong current and could have been swept under the tree. Somehow we all managed to scramble out of the boat and up onto the sweeper and made it to shore…but we did not let go of the boat. We bailed it out and carried on down stream. Not much choice as drift boats only go down stream. In a way, we were lucky to be alive. This was a very dangerous situation. After this experience we walked the boat around the corners looking for sweepers, I think we were all a little scared and a lot more cautious. We made it through the five mile drift and each drift after that it got easier as our skill on the oars improved. Did I say we caught lots of Steelhead also?
NOW BOOKING FOR 2008 Let me know if I can be of service to book you with the 'best' fishing guide and/or fishing lodges. There are NO extra charges to book through me, just a lot of free information and advice from a person with years and years of fishing and fish guiding experience. It is like hiring two guides for the price of one. I will promptly answer your questions and concerns. Cast here http://noelgyger.ca/special-guided.htm to read more of what I have to offer.
Many people book three trips per year to our area; one trip in the spring (March-April-May), one trip in the summer (June-July-August) and one trip in the fall (September-October-November). They love having the same guide but fishing for different fish in different areas.

Fishing Report from: Nicholas Dean Lodge for the Week of February 17 to 23, 2007
Hello Anglers,
From my desk back home in Ontario, I’ve been keeping track of the Terrace weather via the weather network (and one of our guides, Andrew Blix – a much more reliable source of information!), and it seems that temperatures are finally on the rise. The cold weather that had gripped us and left rivers frozen solid over the last few months is starting to lose its hold, and we should be able to get out fishing in the near future. It’s been a long time coming, and it’s almost like I get that nervous twitch when I think about firing a 90 ft cast towards that oh-so-nice seam with my Spey rod, or the sharp dip of a float under the surface as a Steelhead takes off!
We are also excitedly preparing for our first guests of the season in late March for Spring Steelhead. Tying large, often gaudy flies, sharpening hooks and retying knots are just a few of the activities that we’ll be working on over the next few weeks. And if you’re thinking of a last minute trip for some of the best Steelhead fishing you’re likely to encounter, contact Noel for a few last minute prime time spaces and a 10% discount off the 2008 rates. Ideal, reliable water conditions, and pools stacked with fish await your cast today…
Until next week, tight lines and screaming reels,
Chad Black
Operations manager
Nicholas Dean Lodge…where every cast is an adventure!
CURRENT REPORT and summary for Northern Coastal Rivers:
Fishing Report from: Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters
KITIMAT RIVER:
Here are some photos of two of the five cutthroat trout that Pat Oliver and Ariel Kuppers caught on the Kitimat River on Wednesday February 20th.
This week weather has been a lot milder and some anglers have been able to get out and do some Cutthroat fishing (see photo above). There is still ice along the banks but Pat and Ariel still had a good day. “They would not bite on worms but bit on small spinners”, says Pat. The Gibbs Silver Heck Croc 3/16 oz was the productive lure of the day.
DOUGLAS CHANNEL: I spoke with two skippers on Saturday who were fishing in the Kitimat Harbour for winter springs but neither one of them were able to catch any Salmon. They were both able to catch a feed of Dungeness Crab and both said they had a great day on the water. Sometimes it is more than enough just to enjoy the boating and outdoors.

CURRENT REPORT and summary for Central Coast/North Van Island Wilderness Rivers:
Fishing Report from: Nimmo Bay Resort
Here we are having lunch at the beginning of a river. A mighty salmon river on the BC coast. Glaciers are rivers in a frozen state and eventually home to the thousands of salmon that are born and return there each year.
This is a humbling experience. You are seated in a restaurant that is never crowded, beside a 10,000 year old glacier , as it births a brand new river. Few get to experience such a drama, only mother nature can produce.
Yet at Nimmo Bay each day presents another miracle, as you come face to face with one natural reality after another.
The quest for the mighty Fish allows you to participate in this annual pageant. The cry of the angler is heard above all else “Just one more cast”.

2007 SEASON REVIEW:
E-mail from Troy Adams, Troy likes to book at least two fly fishing trips (spring and summer) for wild Steelhead with Andrew Rushton of Kalum River Lodge
Hi Noel, just a quick note from Santa Cruz to say thanks for keeping up the reports, I thought I would send up a couple of pictures from the last part of April with Andrew. 3 days and nights of rain, the river came up the fishing slowed down, then picked back up. The only thing I can say is, have patience and listen to the guide, there knowledge can be rewarding. I will be back up in April to do it again, maybe we can fish together on a trip down the Kalum with Andrew. Talk to you soon, Troy Adams

Noel Gyger - WEEKLY FISHING REPORT dated February 3 – February 10, 2008
(Number 57)
Dear Fishing Friends:
SUMMARY: The weather is not much better than it was last week. It warmed up a bit but in my opinion it is still too cold to fish. Now, this may not be the case with the younger folk. The young folk’s say all you need to do is dress properly. Check-out the photo below:
Is this what they mean by proper dress? This photo was taken quite a few years ago. The fellow in the photo is Mark Krupa and he called this shot “drifting through space”. Did we have fun or what in these conditions winter steelheading on the Kalum River? Photo by Mark Krupa (at least is was his camera) I took the shot.
Extreme cold and blowing snow drifts have been the norm over the last couple of days. The Kitimat River is basically frozen over, check out the Ron Wakita report below.

Fishing Report from: Nicholas Dean Lodge for the Week of February 3 to 9, 2008
Earlier this week in the Skeena region, temperatures were warming and by all indications, the rivers were well on their way to thawing. I spoke to a few friends who had mentioned they were able to get out fishing briefly in the middle of the week, but fishing was slow and they had to look around for some open water to fish. Since then, we have been gripped by temperatures as low as – 12 C and a few feet of snow, closing off all fishing opportunities, unless one wanted to get out ice fishing!
Still, we are opportunistic that temperatures will start warming soon and we’ll be able to rid of ourselves of this mid-winter cabin fever!
If you’re thinking of trying your hand at fishing the Skeena region this year, whether it be for Spring Steelhead or Trophy Chinook, I highly suggest that you contact Noel. Noel has been living in the Skeena region all his life, and is a wealth of knowledge regarding the best times to fish and can tailor an experience that is right for you.
Be sure to check out this week’s feature on trophy Chinook fishing to see if this type of fishing might appeal to you. Here is a little bit of the article:
Fishing for Trophy Skeena River Chinook
It never ceases to amaze me that some local residents in Terrace have little idea of exactly what’s in their backyard. The same can be said of my hometown in Fergus, Ontario regarding brown trout fishing. Sure, they know that the Skeena and its tributaries have some fish that move through each year, but on more than a few occasions, it’s surprised me that they weren’t aware that some of the largest Salmon and Steelhead in the world return to the river in front of them each year. This is made even more apparent since the river is world famous for the fish it produces, and anglers travel from all over the globe to have a chance at these fish.

CURRENT REPORT and summary for Northern Coastal Rivers:
Fishing Report from: Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters
KITIMAT RIVER: With the recent cold weather, the Kitimat River is almost completely frozen from bank to bank in the lower Kitimat. There is very limited access to the upper Kitimat River and very poor fishing conditions yet we received reports of a couple of snowmobilers fishing the Powerlines and catching a couple of trout. You have to admire the resourcefulness of the 'hardcore angler'.
DOUGLAS CHANNEL: There have been a couple of boats who braved the winter elements this week looking for winter chinook but neither of the boaters I spoke to were able to catch any. The herring usually start to migrate into the Kitimat harbour this time of the year to spawn and the feeder chinook follow them into this end of the Douglas Channel. This fishery is difficult to predict. It happens when it happens usually some time between now and the end of March.

Noel Gyger - WEEKLY FISHING REPORT dated January 27 – February 3, 2008
(Number 56)
Dear Fishing Friends:
SUMMARY: It has been just too cold all week. Fishing is poor, simple as that. Normal day time temperatures are 0 to -1 but they have been as low as -10 to -15. Add in the wind chill factor and fishing is near impossible. Time to tie some flys and get some tackle ready for when the weather warms up which the weatherman says will be next week.
Thank you to those who sent me their vote for the best 2007 fishing Photo of The Week. Drum roll please…and the winner is:
#18 May 13, 2007. This beautiful wild Steelhead was landed on the Kalum River by pro fly fishing guide Sky Richard. Could this be the 'photo of the year'? Full Report
The above text is the caption that is posted on the website…and included a question…and I got my answer. Thanks again for sending me your votes.

The new scenic river photo posted on “Scenic Photos” is of the Zymoetz (Copper) River and was taken by Gayle Miller. Gayle and her husband Elmer were my guests in 2001. They told me they were very impressed with the fly fishing opportunity on many of our local rivers…and were especially moved by the views on the Copper. I have five of Gayle’s photos framed and on the wall in my office.

Dear Fishing Friends:
SUMMARY: The winter weather has been fair all week. All of our local rivers are extremely low and clean. With these conditions the angler must be stealthy as the fish are spooked. Try using small terminal tackle and only fish the deep water.
Thank you to those who have sent me their vote for best 2007 fishing Photo of the Week. Keep those votes coming. It is wonderful to hear from you. I will let you know at the end of January which one received the most votes. Cast here to view the photos again www.noelgyger.ca/photos-of-the-week

KALUM RIVER: The water, both upper and lower sections are in excellent shape and fishing for Steelhead is good as long as one can “brave” the weather.
AREA RIVER RECORDS: Chinook Salmon: Skeena River, 92.5-pounds; Kalum River, 85-pounds; Kitimat River, 74-pounds; Steelhead: Skeena River, 45-pounds; Coho Salmon: Skeena River, 27-pounds.
Fishing Report from: Nicholas Dean Lodge for the Week of January 13 to January 19, 2008
Noel had it nailed. Not much to report as the water is extremely low and clean and the steelhead are spooked.

CURRENT REPORT and summary for Northern Coastal Rivers:
Fishing Report from: Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters
The photo above is from last summer when the weather was good and the Chinook fishing was excellent. The lucky angler is Justin Lowe with a nice Chinook from the Kitimat River
KITIMAT RIVER: This week the weather was quite mild compared to the cold and snow we have been getting. There has been very little fishing activity on the Kitimat River although the weather has been more forgiving. The trout fishing is usually better this time of year for anyone willing to get out and give it a try.
DOUGLAS CHANNEL: With the milder weather there was a couple of boats fishing the Kitimat Harbour for winter Chinook this week but the two skippers I spoke to had no fish to report. The conditions were 'great' but 'no fish'. It was flat calm water and nice to get the boat out to charge the batteries. Maybe this weekend more boats will get out and find some fish.
Update to this update: Just got word that Clayton Harker and his fishing partner landed four Chinook on Saturday. They were fishing with #6 Gibbs Stewart 50/50. Stay tuned.

2007 SEASON REVIEW:
The photo is of a beautiful wild Coho Salmon landed by my younger brother Mike on the Kalum River on October 10, 2007. We had a great time fishing we landed both Steelhead and Coho on the same day.
